About MGS
Our Purpose, Our History and Our
Resources
The Mobile Genealogical Society is a nonprofit educational
and research organization whose objectives are to collect, preserve, and
disseminate knowledge and information with reference to genealogical and
related historical, biographical and heraldic data. In pursuit of these
objectives, the society has made commitments...
- to promote interest in genealogical research;
- to provide instruction in the use of principles which
will encourage accuracy, care and thoroughness in research and documentation;
- to champion advanced ethical standards;
- to discourage and oppose incompetent and disreputable
practices by researchers;
- to promote scholarly writing in family history
collections;
- to issue publications related to genealogy and related
historical, biographical and heraldic data. Our history began with the first
meeting held February 13, 1962, with 28 charter members present.
Our history began with the first meeting held February
13, 1962, with 28 charter members present.
The charter officers were:
- Arthur Crigler, President
- W. L. Stockwell, V. President
- Mrs. E. L. Moffett, V. President
- William R. Armistead, Secretary
- Mrs. A. F. Perkins, Treasurer
- Mrs. Otis L. Mitchell, Librarian
By August 1964, membership was 143. In January 1996,
membership was 450 including 55 libraries and other societies. One charter
member, Mr. Lewis Brasell, is still active. In the early years meetings were
held twice a month, the second Tuesday of each month was a general meeting and
the fourth Thursday of each month a workshop.
The society now meets on the second Saturday of each
month, , in the cafeteria at the now closed Holy Family
Catholic Church and School complex located on Joyce Road in Mobile,
Alabama. The meeting consists of a Genealogy "How To..." Workshop, a break for
refreshments, a short business session and announcements, followed by a
program, usually a speaker with a topic of a genealogical or historical nature.
Each Monthly Gathering begins at 12:00 noon.
The MGS library is also located at the Holy Family Catholic Church and School complex in the old
school library building. New books donated to the society are reviewed in our
Deep South Genealogical Quarterly (DSGQ) and then placed in our library.
The society also buys books to place in our library in memory of deceased
members. Many quarterlies from societies throughout the world are retained in
our library (acquired through an exchange program). We also have, and will
accept, old books and genealogical collections, at our discretion.
In addition to written and published materials, we have
microfilm, microfiche and CD-ROMs available to use on the media and computer
equipment available in our library. The library's schedule of open days can be
viewed on the Events page.
Research and abstract projects are ongoing for the purpose
of compiling and publishing records from Mobile County and surrounding areas.
These records include, but are not limited to, marriage, death, burial, church
and bible records. All current MGS generated publications are listed in each
issue of the DSGQ with price and shipping information. Backdated issues of the
DSGQ are also available for purchase by mail and at meetings. In addition, we
have compiled, by subject, the contents of the first 30 years of DSGQ. That
compiled list is available for purchase.
A computer surname database was established in 1987 for
members submitting five-generation pedigree charts. Printouts are made
available in the library. In addition, MGS has available for purchase a
membership yearbook which includes all member surnames being researched.
Currently, the MGS has members in the following United
States: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida,
Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan,
Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,
Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia,
Washington and Wisconsin, as well as, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico,
the State of Victoria in Australia and in Saudi Arabia.
